Four Wednesday sessions from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the following dates: March 14, March 28, April 11 and April 25. There will be homework in between courses.
Maybe you’ve never quilted before but have always wanted to learn how. Or maybe you are a beginner who has dabbled, watched a few YouTube videos but could use some true hands-on instruction to perfect your technique. Either way, our Beginner Quilting class with Josie Sikardi is for you!
In the course you will make a lap-sized quilt from start to finish using an original Quilt Addicts Anonymous pattern that is perfect for a beginner. When you are finished with this course, you’ll have the necessary supplies and knowledge to be able to take what you’ve learned to tackle a beginner to intermediate pattern on your own.
The course costs $80 for 8 hours of instruction from Josie, and you may need to purchase additional supplies. The course fee does not include the cost of fabric. The Stripping in Paradise pattern is included in the class fee and we will give you a 25 percent off discount on all supplies needed for this class.
Previous quilting experience is not required, but class participants must own or be able to borrow for the length of the class a sewing machine that they know how to use.
Students will learn how to do the following: Sew an accurate quarter-inch seam; srip piece to speed up sewing; make half-square triangles; pressing techniques for perfect points; assemble a quilt top; layer and baste a quilt; straight line quilting with a walking foot; and bind a quilt.
In Session 1 on Sept. 20 we are going to cover strip piecing, using a rotary cutter and sewing half-square triangles; in Session 2 on Oct. 4 we will assemble the quilt; in Session 3 on Oct. 18 we will layer, baste and quilt; In Session 4 we will bind the quilt.
Here’s what you need for this course. Note, we recommend using fabric from a quilt shop (preferably ours!) because it is higher quality, holds up longer and is easier to work with than fabric from a big box store:
- 1 jelly roll
- 2 ¾ yards of coordinating fabric for the top and binding
- 4 ¼ yards fabric for the back
- Full-sized batting
- A working sewing machine with needle and bobbin that you know how to operate
- Quarter-inch presser foot or a machine with a quarter-inch stitch setting
- Walking foot
- High-quality thread such as Aurifil
- Rotary cutter
- 18×24 inch cutting mat or larger
- 6×24 inch quilting ruler
- A 6 ½ inch square quilting ruler
We can help with fabric choices and when you sign up we will go into more detail what you need for each class, so you can spread out your supplies purchases if you like.
The classes are at Quilt Addicts Anonymous, 1232 30th St., Rock Island, IL. You must purchase the class in order to sign up. Since space is limited, cancellations made within 48 hours of the class will not be refunded.
